Wilma Cometh

it’s sunday and the hurricane looms large. fortuneately, wilma is only supposed to be a cat 2 storm when it hits florida, and she is supposed to go across the peninsula very quickly.

i’ve made some preps locally. i saw good ole jeb on tv and he cautioned that everyone should be able to food and water themselves for 72 hours. easily done, but i fly out of here on friday, so i don’t want to buy too much.

so i bought some fruit, and some sandwich stuff. if i lose power, the sandwich stuff is expendable. and if i don’t eat it by friday, it is trashable.

bought a case of water. 24 bottles. that’s 8 a day, if we lose water. i’m going to fill some pots and pans anyway.

lunch today. mark, who is in curacao, insisted i go to hooters and drink beer. so i did this afternoon. had a couple of beers, and ogled the vixen below.

Giselle from Hooters, Doral-Miami Florida

her name is giselle, and she is from cali, colombia. single best argument FOR illegal immigration i’ve ever heard….. seen. the way she brings me wings with such precision and grace. cough-cough! she was actually pretty cool.

she’s on their 2006 calendar too.

so now to finish my preps. i’ve already pulled everything i own out of my rental and pulled it into my hotel room. everything i have with me from texas is going under the sink. i don’t want the wind using anything as a missile if it gets into my room. i’m on the third floor of my hotel. so i’m not really worried about flooding. just wind and the debris wilma will throw.

i’ve identified the bathroom as my best hidey hole. i guess growing up in oklahoma is paying off. tornado preps are easy to remember. main difference is that the strom will last longer, and we may lose water/power for a lot longer.

projections are sustained winds of 100 mph. gusting up to 130.

i’m doing laundry, and watching tv at the moment. waiting for wilma to come ashore.

it’s windy right now. i gues 10-20 mph winds?

waiting and watching!

UPDATE: it’s 11 pm. still a little windy, but nothing bad. however, i can still see the clouds in the dark. the clouds are moving fast. it’s kind of eerie. wish i had my video camera, and not just my digital. wilma is supposed to hit southern fl at dawn.

i saw a family carrying in supplies downstairs while i was getting my laundry. they had some plastic bins from target full of food and pershiables. peanut butter and dry goods. really well done.

i think they are moving here and only staying in the hotel while they are house hunting. there’s a lot of that. my hotel has a kiitchen in every room. so people who plan on being in a hotel for a bit stay here.

i base my guess that he is planning on living here on the sheer volume of stuff. i saw two of those bins full of food. must have cost a hundred bucks each.

    1. Quick, call out the Florida National Guard! There are palm fronds to be swept up from the streets of Fort Lauderdale! Get the artillery battalions in action, place those EW and SIGINT companies on the line to defend against Mother Nature! Arm the F-16s with laser-guided munitions, perhaps they will be able to destroy the storm with smart iron! After all, that’s the only reason we have a National Guard, nez pas?
