the ncaa decided to do a little study about racism in sports mascots after they studied whether or not to allow sporting events in states that allow the confederate flag.
confederate flag issue aside.

they’ve decided to ban 18 teams, including the florida state SEMINOLES from competing in ncaa sponsored national championships because their mascots are demeaning to native americans.
well, that might be all fine and dandy. rascist fuckers.
and what exactly is ok about having a mascot that is demeaning to whites?
are they going to ban the oklahoma sooners? a sooner is after all a cheating thief. and guess what, they were white.
is their a collegiate team called the vikings? how come they haven’t banned them? how about buccaneers or pirates?
and don’t even get me started on why the ‘fighting irish’ are allowed.

I can’t stand the mascot issue…What a crock of shit. When wil native Americans get tired of living like bums? When will they have more pride in themselves? And don’t tell me the reservations don’t get much money…between the feds and the casinos, someone is getting mighty rich.
Well, I imagine it has to do with political pressure from Native American groups, right? If you feel insulted by the Fightin’ Irish or whatever, then collect signatures or whatever from other offended crackers.
This is another perfect example of how Conservatives cynically (and psychotically) try to twist the protest tactics of minorities who have really had something at stake. Mlah, you make such a fool out of yourself when contort yourself this way; you’re not fooling anybody. You just don’t get it, and you’ll probably always be on the wrong side of history.

Now as for the NCAA thing, why ever would people think that “Seminoles” is a good name for a team? I mean, it’s offensive! Just like “Fighting Irish” — which inherently alludes to the stereotype of the Irishers who can’t control their tempers. And “Boilermakers” which unfairly holds up blue-collar workers to ridicule.
I’m with you mlah. I suppose my mighty WVU Mountaineer’s will never be struck down as offensive to us Hillbillie’s 😀
But how is having a mascot demeaning? It’s a representative of the surrounding area’s culture, is it not? (I guess with the exception of the Bowie Baysox’s mascot…what the hell is that thing?)
Found an interesting piece today in a daily (non-Gus approved) newspaper:

In fact, a tribal high school in Arizona calls its newspaper the Redskin. Another national poll found that 81 percent of American Indians answered no when asked whether colleges and high schools should drop Indian nicknames.
