i actually have a cousin named chelsea king. come on dudes, quit abusing girls. much less killing them.
Well done, Mlah.
A fitting tribute.
Indeed. God rest and keep Terry in the hollow of His hand.
Jeezus f-in H.
What a crock. Delay had a lot of nerve doing for Terri what he didn’t do for his own father. Do Conservatives detest the Supreme Court now?
How many different Federal Court opinions do you need? Why did the Supreme Court refuse to intervene like 6 times. Because they had no case, zip. Wake up to reality. I hope Congress intrudes on all of your married lives in favor of your in-laws very, very soon. And on your precious States’ Rights with Federal power. Douchebag hypocrites.
I’m not agreeing with Gus here, but I think Terri would have been good to do a living will while she was still alive.
I was recently afforded the opportunity to do one with my Last Will and Testament, but didn’t complete it because it was not something I had given any thought to yet.
However, if you’ve been watching CNN the last couple days, they have reported a huge spike in living wills due to the Shiavo case.
There’s always controversy over issues like this, but there would not have been anything to argue about if she had a living will. I think it just taught America a lesson…get your business in order before you die because no one else will take care of it for you. I might just have to give my living will some thought and get it notarized.
Did you guys see the south park episode about this whole thing? I found it very enlightening. You guys should watch it if you get the opportunity.
Oh my gawd, that South Park was amaaaazing, MJohn!
Excellent point, Running Blonde, about Living Wills. Like, if we don’t learn anything else from this episode, at least it made the potential consequences of not having one vividly clear to us all.
mark it on your calendars. gus agredd with someone, complimented someone else, and wasn’t contarry just for arguments sake.
it’s a first.!
haha
Gus, like much of America, and like most of Europe, never glommed onto the fact of the starvation bit. It’s very prehistoric — leave the extremely ill outside the village in the forest to die without the protection of the tribe, either of starvation or more likely to be eaten by wolves. Why not do the decent thing and kill her outright, rather than starve and dehydrate her to death? To compare the lingering death over 2 weeks to the hours-long death from being removed from breathing apparatus, or other “extreme measures,” just ignores the cruelty of this death penalty enforced by so many courts, as Gus crows about. That’s what a lot of conservatives, like me, were upset about. The cowardice of the courts.
Of course, Gus and his ilk were not standing up for the purview of the courts and States’ Rights when the Federal Executive ignored them to intrude in a family dispute, to seize a young child from one family member to return him to another. With assault weapons drawn and pointed into the faces of civilians, they bashed in the door, ransacked the house until they found the child, then grabbed him and ran. Where was your condemnation of politicians interfereing in the court’s business then, Gus, you hypocrite???
I didn’t follow the Elian Gonzales episode. I gave up on Clinton after a while. You’re free to bitch about it, but leave me out of it, as I never had an opinion one way or the other.
Re: Schiavo, Yup, are you implying that you are for assisted suicide and mercy-killing? Anyway, 9 out of 10 doctors agree that it is sometimes best to let Nature take its course. (Note: I made up the 9/10 part to sound like a toothpaste commercial.)
I kept my eyes shut and ears covered to avoid taking notice of any of the bad things that Bubba did while in office, but hey, that Shrub dude is just plain evil and I can’t stand it anymore!!!! — Gussy Boi
I honestly hadn’t come to terms with the necessity of getting involved with politics back then. I have voted since I’ve been able to, but I didn’t follow the news anywhere near as closely as I have since the 2000 election season. It always seemed to me, like it still does to many people, boring and beyond my control.
I’ve been especially riveted since 9/11. So, I’m sorry I got to the party late, Yup, but you may as well just deal with me as I am, instead of teleporting me retroactively to some place and time that I wasn’t, m’kay?
As I’ve said before, Clinton wasn’t any hero of mine to begin with, and after a while he totally lost me, so your little “quote” on my behalf is doubly irrelevant, dodo.
BTW, where does capital punishment fit into the “Culture of Life”?
To be honest, I have been thinking long and hard on my stance regarding the death penalty. On the other hand, had Atta survived the 9/11 thing, I would be all for treating him as he treated thousands. (By the way, I sincerely hope that all those judges in the Schiavo starvation/dehydration death sentence are treated in their dotage with the same compassion, dignity and respect she received.)
A lot of conservatives are having their faith in the judicial system shaken, what with so many death-row inmates being exonerated by DNA evidence and all. Not to mention some really shaky high-profile cases lately (honestly, I would not have been able to convict Peterson had I been a jurist, based on the “evidence” presented on the teevee).
I fear our society is headed for Hitler’s utopia, where the untermenschen were disappeared to the ‘labor’ camps and ‘studied’ by ‘doctors’ (Mengele anyone?). If the criteria for kililng someone in our society is that their higher-thinking capacity is less than mine, then Gus should be locked in a room for a month while “medical attention” is denied him. Ronald Reagan should have been quietly euthanized when his mind went all alzheimery. The Pope should have been smothered with a pillow when he required a breathing tube — heck, when he developed Parkinson’s! Same for Micheal J Fox. Billy C. should have been left to die in the Krispy Kreme rather than be given a quadruple bypass. All those pesky kids born with Downs Syndrome should be put out of their misery as soon as they are diagnosed.
I point to your Johnny-come-lately politicization, Gus, because you keep jumping up and down about the ‘evil’ conservatives (how is there evil when it’s all relative. anyway?) like W and company, yet you completely ignore the evil on your own side. You say that KKK Byrd and Drunken Killer Kennedy are not representative of you, yet you never speak out against their rantings, nor do you do anything to oust them. All you can do is complain, you never contribute to a solution (except perhaps the annual check you write out to Amnesty International, so you can be cool like Robert Redford).
I personally have forgiven Byrd for his KKK past becasue he has earned that forgiveness by fighting, since I’ve been alive, for some of the same things that I fight for. If the NAACP isn’t calling for his ouster, that’s good enough for me– I would follow their lead.
As for Ted Kennedy (we’ve been thru this before…), why he wasn’t prosecuted for Chapaquiddik (or however you spell it), I have no idea. Ask your congressperson, why don’t you? I’m totally serious. Make a stink about it. I’m sure he has enough enemies such that if the FBI thought it was possible to bag him, then they would.
You can keep trying to hold me accountable for everything that went wrong in the past, but I’ll keep telling you that that was not my responsibility, cuz it wasn’t, sorry!
All I really know is that I am in the political opposition, that’s why I bitch and bitch and bitch. And that’s all I have to know or do. W and co. are in my face, and I react, and if you react to me then we may argue. Whether you engage on the topic that I reacted to or LAMELY attempt to deflect any and all criticism by invoking the past that I wasn’t the least bit involved in is up to you, Yup. You may have noticed that I’ve mostly given up taking you folks to task for W’s Christian Conservative stances because you never put up much energy denfending them, so I assumed that they kind of embarass you, too. I’m merciful like that. I’m one of the kindest guys you’d ever want to meet, believe it or not. That’s the main way that I make a difference in the world, by treating everyone I meet with peace, love & understanding. Except for mean people, whom I will fight like hell forever.
Do you seriously fear a Hitlerian future? I don’t think things are going to get any worse than they already are. It *could* happen here, of course, just because of human nature, but not for the foreseeable.
What do you think of assisted suicide?
“Assisted suicide.” You seem to be trying to get me to say something here.
First, I believe the Schiavo thing was a death sentence from the courts, and they were simply too cowardly to state so outright. And at least the criminals condemned by the judiciary can be pardoned by the executive (whether governor or president).
Second, I believe that there are 10 million ways to die out there in the world (I’ve survived several of them) and if you really want to croak yourself, there’s plenty of ways to do so on your own without getting someone else to pull the trigger.
And third, I have no problem with those so-called living wills that direct medical personnel to refrain from using ‘extreme measures’ to keep you alive. That’s your choice, same as pulling the trigger on that pistol you stuck in your mouth.
Gus, you seem to want a society where there’s a suicide booth on every corner, so that when the prostitute laughs at the size of your ding-a-ling, you can go deposit a quarter and get a lethal injection. Suicide should be a difficult choice to make, if you’re stupid enough to be so inclined, so that you can be sure that’s what you want. Not something you give no thought about, like the hookup you make at the bar (which, if the ho has AIDS, could even be a form of suicide). You only get one go at life.
