Taxes

everyone remember the flat tax? i really liked the flat tax. it didn’t carry a progreesive element that would tax disposable income. but it held out the possibility of eliminating tax loopholes. ensuring that everyone got taxed.

now i read on lobowalk that dubya may eliminate the irs altogether. i can hear the liberals whining already.

elsewhere, madame butterfly wants to hear about your sexlife.

here is the original report on drudge

    1. Honestly, I dunno how those alternatives work. Will research and perhaps report back to you on it later. Do any of your other readers give a hoot about it? It’s not a very sexy issue.

    2. not a very sexy issue? you should try pating taxes. all of a sudden it becomes a lot more important.

the down side to this is that it is regressive. ie taxes everyone pretty much the same. rich poor, we pay the same sales tax.

the upside is there are no longer any loopholes. and the irs goes away. no more need for expensive tax returns (for us).

      it’s a very sexy issue.

believe it or not, i’d prefer to keep the irs, and just go to a flat tax. you can still make that a little progressive with the use of personal deductions.

    3. Most conservatives have been for a flat tax for a long time-for some reason it scares the hell out of the libs.

God forbid we make taxes simple, and difficult to get out of paying.

    4. You’re absolutely right, mlah-when one pays taxes, it tends to be an emotional issue, if not sexy. There is always a need for accountability when paying taxes, so a different set-up at the irs would be fine. But having a flat tax, although I’m not totally sure about the logistics, would seem just about right. You also have to understand the differences in states and how their current tax system is spread out. Then, of course, you have Penna-just legalized slot machines that’s supposed to relieve property taxes; however, our wondersul governor has proposed an increase in the income tax that would then offset the reduction of the property tax-all to benefit Philadelphia. I need to move!!! Apparently european countries use this tax system.

    5. “you should try pating taxes”
Pardon me? What makes you think I haven’t been paying taxes since I was 15 years old? Cuz I have. It’s true I don’t own property, that would bring a lot of other concerns, but, jeez, back off

My preliminary research shows that what everyone can agree on is that a flat tax makes things much better for the filthy rich. It could take them from 39% to 17% (or whatever rate it ended up as). They would then be able to invest in companies, hiring, etc. and the ecomony would boom, it is said. Or just spend more on themselves, who knows?

I recognize that all systems of taxation are somehat arbitrary and ultimately unfair, no matter how you cut it. Yet I tend to think a complicated tax code tries to address a lot of worthy kinks, and that simplicity is overrated in this context.

Having lived hand-to-mouth for many years myself, I can say that the poor can’t get ahead like the rich can– it usually takes money to make more money. Then again, people should be able to keep what they earned with their risks, though it’s easy to resent the rich.

Tell me just one thing for now: Why the hell would a non-rich person want the flat tax system?

    6. because there would be no loopholes for ANYONE. so then he knows that the rich are at least paying the same, and not sheltering money in bermuda, and giving it to there buddies nephew as a tax write off.

we all pay the same. sounds like equality to me.

    7. taxes suck. I know theyre necessary and everything, but I lose a lot of money out of every paycheck because of that stuff.

    8. “no loopholes for ANYONE”
I saw someone refute this by saying the flat tax is more loophole-CONSOLIDATING than loophole-closing. Whatever.
How does the VAT work? They have that in Europe, I think.
