I’ve been watching the war in Gaza fairly closely. Not close enough to call myself an expert by any means, but probably more closely than most. So Hamas did start…
Why does she matter? She’s dating one of the Kelce’s. Good for them. Hope it works out for them. Who celebrities are dating stopped mattering a long, long time ago…
As for the Hindi friend’s claim that Amazon customers have donated more than France (originally posted, as far as I can tell, on this blog at 5 p.m. on Dec. 28):
http://www.buzzmachine.com/archives/2004_12_28.html#008750
well, by Dec. 27, France had pledged $57 mil:

and as of today Amazon has collected $15 mil

That 2nd article also has some interesting stats:
“France allotted .41 percent of its gross national income to development aid in 2003, nearly triple the .15 percent from the United States, according to the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
“The United States, which has a far bigger economy, led in dollar terms, donating $16.2 billion to France’s $7.2 billion, which ranked third among the G-8 nations, OECD figures show.”
Gus the France apologist.
I followed the links from the links and got to one of the blogs decrying the fact that the inaugural balls will be going on despite the pain and misery throughout the world, especially following the tsunami disaster. Those whinge fests were started around 30-31 December, say 5 days after the tsunami. Why, they screamed, is the United States sitting on its ass doing nothing when we could be giving money to those poor countries who are suffering so? Why are those fat cat Republicans (like Ken Lay) spending so lavishly on balls and dos when their dollars — sqeezed so from the brows of honest people who work for their corporate masters — could be put to better use alleviating the misery of others? (Never mind that many of those suffering from the disaster are cheerleaders for Osama bin Laden and the Islamofascist terrorists.)
But wait! Why don’t these Leftist do-gooders stop and think about something for a change, instead of knee-jerk whining? First things first: the disaster was on the other side of the world from us, in areas that do not have instantaneous communications and infrastructure rivaling California’s. We had to see the extent of the damage, figure out where our efforts could best be spent (after all, those starving villagers can’t eat greenbacks), and then coordinate with the host governments to see where THEY wanted the aid placed. And then we had to get it there. Perhaps CBS could rush Dan Rather there in a day or two, but a massive logistics operation to ship aid across the globe takes some time to set up and get moving.
And sure enough, the U.S. Navy came steaming over the horizon bearing gifts of food and water, medicines and blankets. And manpower, to clear out the damage, recover the dead, treat the wounded and build temporary shelters. Within about a day of all those whiners posting their condemnations of the greediness of the Republican/corporate fat cats, the stupidity of W for just chopping out undergrowth on his ranch rather than jumping up and down on TV and publicly feeling the pain of all those suffering people.
Then the governments of some of the countries we’re helping — and oh, by the way, the cost of the logistics tain (ships, aircraft) and personnel we are putting on the job is in the millions per day — tell us that we can’t keep our troops on their soil overnight. They have to fly in every day and fly out every night. We can’t have round-the-clock operations, nor make our efforst as effiicient as possible, because the governments of countries like Indonesia don’t want to admit that they need foreign troops on their soil to get through the crisis.
Amazon isn’t the only private organization in the U.S. that’s collecting money for the stricken. It’s but one. And it was gathering more money in the beginning than many of the Eurotrash governments were pledging.
Funny how you defend France’s largesse, Gus. It’s on display in the Cote d’Ivoire.
Yes, Yuppy, who did offer “enough” initially? The US? France? Corporations? You? Me? How much is enough? The enormity of the destruction became clear only gradually. I wasn’t one of those who chose to complain about the US, so get your gnarly breath outta my face. And try decaf.
I was just doing my part to cure a nasty anti-France rumor– being spread by conservatives– with a strong dose of facts. Maybe Amazon’s collection was bigger for 20 minutes the day after or whatever, that’s awesome. I don’t even know what’s going on in Cote d’Ivoire, so don’t confuse the issue here. Tell us all about it in some other post. As regards the tsunami, I don’t think France or the US or anybody was cheap. Maybe public pressure played into people and gov’ts giving more, and it was a good thing, I really don’t know. The spectacle of this turning into a pissing contest isn’t very attractive, though, I know that. But France, among others, doesn’t deserve your crap.
