Unusual Sports

one thing i really love about the olympics is that you get to see some unusual sports. competition is competition. i happened across the ladies curling event the other night. i don’t know why exactly but for some reason, i sort of took a shine to it!

they play shuffleboard pretty much, except they are on ice. you can watch the girl slide forward and just before lets go of the handle of the rock (that’s actually what they call it) she’ll give it a little twist to make it spin just a little. just like a curve ball in baseball. hence the name ‘curling’

Jamey and Cassie Johnson

these are two members of the amrican team, sisters from some little podunk town minnesota. i’m liking minnesota a whole lot more lately.

two of you take shots, alternating with your opponent, while the other two get to work the brooms. i’m not sure exactly what the brooms do, but i suspect they make the ice just a little bit rougher on whichever side of the rock they are sweeping. and this causes the rock to slow on that side, which helps curl the thing.

Jamey Johnson

look how stretched out she is. all so she can see the line of her shot that much better. one of her teammates is down at the other end actually holding a brrom up at the spot she needs to aim.

i can’t for the life of me figure out exactly what is on her butt, but i’m liking it.

the american women’s team finished 8th.

The big 12. I love college football. I’ve posted about the Oklahoma Sooners before. I’m following them again this year. Most recently they were upset by Texas Tech, and I’m…

I just discovered the worst bruise I have ever gotten from practicing tkd. Y’all don’t want to know.

    1. Women’s curling does have some lookers. After graduating from college I followed their tour for a year. Cities like Saskatkewan, Butte, Lake Cod, Frozen Bear, with the finals in Minneapolis.

While they do look like amazing athletes what with the brooming and all. At that time – early 1990s – it was all partying all the time.

I can’t tell you how often we’d tear up a red roof inn drunk, stoned, and high. There’s nothing like naked curling down a hotel hallway at 3 am with these girls.

However, like most good things it had to come to an end when Carly Jorgensen tried to get an unfair advantage and started up with the roids. She went into a rage in Pierre ND and about killed a Laotion hotel clerk who didn’t put out Rice Krispies for the free continental breakfast. Poor Pham Luc never saw the rock coming at him.

I went my own way after that. Things weren’t the same. Sure in the late 90s there was a little excitement when Shaniqua Washington tried to break the curling color barrier, but learned the hard way that curling is a closed shop.

    2. yeah man, she is definitely bangable!!! Sorry about not making it to san antonio this trip, maybe next trip I’ll come out there and we could go bar hoping!!!

    3. Actually the sweeping is to melt the ice. Before the match they sprinkle the ice with little droplets of water which instantly freeze. The brooms sweeping tends to melt the droplets of ice on which the rock glides. the fast sweeping allows the rock to go a little farther. If you have observed, the team captain calls “sweep” or let it go, and the effort is to make the rock go to the designated spot. I have thrown two rocks while we were in Germany, and the Canadian Brigadier and his Sgt Major got a belly laugh at a “yank” using a 5 step bowling approach in curling DAD
