memorial day is when the average american gets a day off for a barbeque.
when i lived in maryland i really liked seeing all of the bikers on the road as part of ‘rolling thunder’. somewhere near 400k bikers descend on dc to make sure that congress does not forget about the MIAs.
but i’m going to steer clear of that before i get classified as a milblogger.
but a while back, and i posted about this last memorial day, so i won’t harp on it too much. a navy chief, (chief teaff) who was a seal, muted the tv as a bunch of us lesser ranbks were spending our memorial day watching movies. and told us to each stop for just one minute and think about all of the people who died. usually nasty grisly deaths, so that we could get a day off.
it stuck with me.
in rota, spain (and in gtmo) the hospital had the walls lined with all of the corpsman medal of honor winners. put their pictures up along with their citations. nice descriptions of what they did to deserve the nations highest award.
and to give me a day off.
so i thought i’d put a face on someone today. i’m not preaching about iraq, wwii, vietnam, or the civil war. i just want to put a face to someone we are memorializing TODAY.
take a look at David R. Ray. follow the link and read his exploits if you dare.
he died.
and we get a day off.
remember him when you’re eating your hamburgers today.
I didn’t take a day off. But I did close my eyes for a minute and think really hard “thank you”.
Thanks indeed. And thank you, sir, for your service.
Right on. That’s cool.
Monday’s one of my days off, so it isn’t an issue for me.
I gotta take this opportunity, though, to piss on all you schmucks who gave Kerry crap about his medals. That was the lowest, scummiest hachet-job ever and I can only hope that the bad faith involved rots inside all of you til it kills you.
I just read that Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire. Now that’s sadder than sad.
