i think i’m guilty of poor behavior.
bunny apparently likes even numbered tips. she doesn’t like it when she gets a tip of 4.50. much less 2.82.
i can understand not liking the people who leave too little, or just loose change. but i am a huge offender apparently of bad tipping.
i had no idea.
i think i tip a little too much really. not way too much but a little bit.
i need to know from some of you who have worked as waiters, waitresses if i am guilty of poor tipping.
i don’t leave even numbered tips like 4 or 5 bucks.
what i do is round off the total of the sale. ie, if the bill is 12.18, the first thing i’ll do is tip the change to make the end sale even. what i mean is that in the tip part of the sales slip from my check card, i’ll fill in the 82 cents.
then i figure how much i should actually leave. for 12.18 2 bucks or so is very close to 15 percent, so then i fill in the 2 in front of the 82 cents. and then add the tip to my sale for a total charge of 12.18 + 2.82 = 15 bucks.
nice and easy for me.

You’re looking at tips in the wrong way, mlah.
You should know better!
The rule of thumb should be about the service. If the wait staff are pleasant, patient, and proactive (meaning they come around and check on you, and make sure that your order is in and keep you posted on its progress), then you should give a good tip, particularly if you plan on returning to the restaurant. they will treat you well the next time.
My husband and I average about 18-20% when the service and food are excellent (especially when they’ve been so patient with my two godzillas at the table). 15% if the wait staff are rude, scattered, or uppity.
I’ve done these types of jobs before to get myself through college and, believe me, I would never do it again. It is a tough job.
Remember: Always think about how you want to be treated when you work hard.
(And, no, I’m not shaking my finger at you!) 🙂
If the service is good, then anything over 15% of the bill is good. Whether it’s even numbered or not.
Hey, hats off to her for braving the world of flirting for tips. I haven’t personally ever done that type of job, and don’t really have the desire to do it either. I love to flirt with men, but I don’t think I was made for waitressing. I could get pissed off at someone for making a rude comment (and usually men think that women can’t hear them when they make said comments), and then my whole demeanor would change.
Working for tips sucks…in short.

Firstly – you’re not assholish at all. That’s exactly what I do in restaurants. In bars it’s another story, though. However. . .
I get really pissed off when people complain about tips. And believe me, I actually had to work for them myself. For over ten years.
The way I look at it:
Tips is: To Insure Prompt Service; not a right. You are not OWED 15%. And if you’re too worried about the tipjar, you’re not working hard enough.
Okay. . .I should also say that I grossly overtip, usually. Why? Because I’ve been there. Tell your friend to sling drinks, not food. More money. Less hassle.
But to quit bitching about tips because you simply can’t count on ’em.
